As we finalize the details for our 2012 summer programs, we are pleased to announce that the Artaria String Quartet will be in residence, and will be featured during our Junior Composers Studio and Junior Composers Institute.
5HE: 2011 Young Composers Competition

Fifth House Ensemble (5HE) is a mixed chamber group (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello, double bass, drum set, and piano) that has announced its 2011 annual young composer competition. Young composers are invited to arrange a cover of a rock song of 4-11 minutes long that must include at least 4 instruments from the 5HE roster.
DSSO: Kate Meyer (JC alum 2006-08) named co-winner of 2011 Competition
DULUTH, MN (February 25, 2011) – Two young composers were named as co-winners of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra's 2011 James and Paula Nelson Young Composer contest: Kate Meyer (Junior Composers alumna) and Egeman Kesikli.
Zeitgeist: Andy Troska (JCI 2009) wins Eric Stokes Song Contest
Andy Troska, a junior at Centennial High School in Circle Pines and 2009 alumnus of JCI, was named winner of Zeitgeist’s 16th annual Eric Stokes Song Contest in the youth category.
Sam Ecoff: Build a home studio for < $500
Sam Ecoff will present a Salon during the Composer & Songwriters Institutes on "How to build a home recording studio for $500 or less" and he will serve as engineer and mentor for the Songwriter Institute demo sessions.
He received his degree in Music Theory and Composition from UW-Eau Claire and studied music technology at Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Winter Park, Florida. He has been teaching private music lessons since 1988 and has been a member of the piano faculty at the Waukesha County Conservatory of Music since 1997.
MTNA 2010 Distinguished Composer: Dr. Seth Custer
January 18, 2010 (Minneapolis, MN) -- Seth Custer (Program Director of Junior Composers) has been named the 2010 MTNA Distinguished Composer.
Featured Opportunity for Summer 2011: New Symphonies
Junior Composers is pleased to announce the specifications for its featured opportunity: New Symphonies. Each summer, student composers are invited to submit scores for a reading by professional musicians. This year, the ensemble is the Minnesota Sinfonia which will be led by conductor Bill Eddins.
Beijing Modern Music Festival 2011: Young Composers Project
The 2011 Beijing Modern Music Festival seeks short, original, recently-composed, unperformed, and un-awarded chamber scores for their Young Composers Project. Awards include: residency, performance during 2011 Festival (May 21-27, 2011), publication, and recording. Travel to China and accommodations will be provided.

Junior Composers follows the creative lives of alumni by documenting their accomplishments and presenting examples of their work. EVERYEAR 2012 takes place on Friday-Saturday, July 20-21 on the University of Minnesota campus.
