Junior Composers Institute

Sunday, July 18 through Saturday, July 24, 2010

The Institute will be celebrating its ninth year as we make a move to the University of Minnesota School of Music. The Institute will continue to offer an intense one-week residential music camp for composer-performers age 14-20.

The program offers composition tutorials and music theory and ear-training instruction. Every student has the opportunity to work with advanced music notation software. Students are expected to compose at least one work during the week and to participate in at least one premiere during the Festival Salons on Saturday, July 24.

Feature Opportunity: Film scoring

The Institute’s 2010 feature opportunity is for students to compose a score for silent film prior to arriving at camp and to receive a reading of that work by a professional ensemble. Scores for the professional ensemble must be submitted by June 1, 2010. You will be invited to attend a number of Online Forums in Spring 2010 that will discuss issues of scoring for film. A selection of silent films can be found here (link added later).

Students will be expected to compose a new work during the Institute (from conception, sketch, notation, revision, and rehearsal to performance). New works will be premiered in the morning or afternoon Festival Salons on Saturday, July 24, 2010.

The fee for the Institute is $650, inclusive of room, board, linens, instruction, and field trips. The student is encouraged to bring money for snacks and one meal off-campus (approximately $20, total).
