Junior Composers StudioMonday, July 12 through Saturday, July 24, 2010New this year, the Studio is a two-week intensive residential music camp for composers age 14-20 providing opportunities for extended composition tutorials and music theory instruction with experiences in a number of forms of music analysis and score study. Students will also compose a number of composition exercises during the week.
Resident film composer
A major feature of the Studio is the opportunity to work with noted film composer, Richard Marriott, during a three-day residency from Thursday through Saturday, July 15-17,2010. The residency will include seminars on Mr. Marriott's film scores, special screenings, and master classes. To learn more about Richard Marriott and his music, click here.
Feature Opportunity: Film scoring
Studio composers will each compose music to accompany a silent film that will be read by a professional ensemble on Monday evening, July 12. Scores for the professional ensemble must be submitted by June 1, 2010. You will be invited to attend three online composers forums in Spring 2010 that will discuss issues of scoring for film. You are encouraged to keep updated on the schedule of forums; each one will cover steps in the creative process using the book, Hearing the Movies (Oxford University Press). Studio composers will participate in all of the activities of Junior Composers Institute from July 18-24 and can either continue work on their film score or compose a new work. Students will be expected to compose a new work during the Institute (from conception, sketch, notation, revision, and rehearsal to performance). New works will be premiered in the morning or afternoon Festival Salons on Saturday, July 24, 2010.
The fee for the Studio is $1300, inclusive of room, board, linens, instruction, and field trips. The student is encouraged to bring money for snacks and one meal off-campus (approximately $40, total). Register for Junior Composers Studio.
